About DJ Soul Sister
DJ Soul Sister is an internationally-known, veteran DJ artist whose broadcast programs and live performances feature only the music she loves: 1970s – mid-1980s soulful rarities in R&B, funk, disco, jazz, and more from her personal collection of over 10,000 vinyl records.
A native of New Orleans, Soul Sister has volunteered for 30 years with WWOZ FM New Orleans community radio, where she hosts her Soul Power show on Saturday nights. As a performance DJ, she has been playing and promoting her own parties since 1997, and has opened for artists ranging from Questlove to George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic. She is the first DJ to win New Orleans' prestigious Big Easy Entertainment Award for "Best DJ," which she received in 2010.
Born Melissa A. Weber in New Orleans, she is also a music historian who has presented her research at academic conferences for the American Musicological Society, Pop Conference, and Society of American Archivists, among others. She teaches a History of Urban Music course for the College of Music and Media at Loyola University New Orleans, and serves as curator of the Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz, a division of Tulane University Special Collections. Soul Sister's life mission is to share the music, stories, and culture that inspire her, by any means necessary.
Artists in Residence at The Chloe
Celebrating the talents and diversity of our creative community has always been central to The Chloe’s mission—from our menus and decor, to curated products by local artisans.
